This right-hand-drive 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ78 Troop Carrier combines Toyota’s proven 1HZ diesel drivetrain with an Alu-Cab Hercules roof conversion and a thoughtfully equipped overland platform.

The original roof rack has been removed and replaced with the Alu-Cab Hercules conversion, transforming the Troopy into a far more capable and integrated expedition vehicle. Unlike a conventional rooftop tent, the Hercules conversion creates an elevated sleeping area while preserving access from inside the vehicle and keeping the Troopy’s usable interior space below.

We have also recently completed extensive maintenance and refurbishment work, including replacement of the drivetrain fluids, refinishing the interior floor, cleaning up the auxiliary electrical wiring, and servicing the engine oil.

This is a distinctive, highly capable Land Cruiser that can be used immediately or further customized into a long-range touring and camping vehicle.

Alu-Cab Hercules Roof Conversion

The original exterior roof rack was removed and replaced with an Alu-Cab Hercules roof conversion. This integrated pop-top system provides an elevated sleeping area that is accessible from inside the Troopy while maintaining useful standing and living space within the vehicle.

The Hercules conversion gives the truck a much cleaner, more purposeful profile while significantly improving its usefulness as an overland and camping platform.

Drivetrain and Capability

The naturally aspirated Toyota 1HZ is known around the world for its straightforward design, durability, and suitability for remote travel. It is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a dual-range four-wheel-drive system.

Unlike the earlier leaf-sprung HZJ75 Troop Carriers, the HZJ78 uses a coil-sprung front axle for improved ride quality and control both on pavement and over rough terrain. This example is further equipped with a heavy-duty Terrain Tamer suspension system.

Condition and Intended Use

This is a used, 26-year-old expedition vehicle rather than a fully restored show truck. It presents as a purpose-built Land Cruiser with the normal cosmetic character expected from its age, mileage, and intended use.
